Mid-Term
Mission Trips
Give a season to Christ.
Spend several weeks or months immersed in a rhythm of prayer, authentic community, discipleship, and service that can transform your life from the inside out.
Come and Stay
Give yourself the time to enter deeply into the life of mission.
A mid-term mission invites you to step into the life of a missionary community for several weeks to six months — sharing in its prayer, its work, its friendships, and its daily life among the poor.
With time, something different begins to happen. You are no longer simply visiting the mission or completing a service project. You are learning to pray, to serve, to love, and to live your faith in the ordinary moments of every day.
Come for a season. Leave with a deeper relationship with Christ, a greater love for His people, His universal Church, and a missionary heart that can go with you wherever He calls you next.
The Missionary Way of Life
Every Francis Institute mission post is unique, but every missionary is formed by the same way of life: a life rooted in prayer, nourished by the sacraments, strengthened through authentic community, and poured out in sacrificial service. These four pillars form the foundation of every Francis Institute missionary.
-

A LIFE OF PRAYER
A missionary’s first calling is not to ministry, but to intimacy with Christ. Before we can bring His love to the world, we must first learn to remain with Him.
Prayer is where the reservoir of the heart is formed. Day by day, through Sacred Scripture, silence, and the prayer of the Church, Christ deepens our capacity to receive His love. What begins as a daily discipline gradually becomes a way of life—a heart continually turned toward God.
The mission is never sustained by our own strength. Only a heart continually filled by Christ can overflow into the lives of others. The deeper the reservoir, the more abundantly His love can be poured out.
-

SACRAMENTAL LIFE
Every reservoir needs a source. For the missionary, that source is Christ Himself, truly present in the Eucharist. The tabernacle is the heart of every mission because it is there that we return again and again to be nourished by the One we proclaim.
Through the Eucharist, regular Confession, and the grace of the sacraments, Christ heals what is wounded, strengthens what is weak, and gradually transforms our hearts into His own. While each mission post has its own unique rhythm, we strive to remain rooted in the sacramental life of the Church whenever it is available.
The closer we remain to Christ, the more faithfully we can carry His presence into the world.
-

AUTHENTIC MISSIONARY COMMUNITY
Missionaries are not meant to follow Christ alone.
Single missionaries live in intentional community with other singles in men’s and women’s households—sharing meals, prayer, service, recreation, and everyday life together as a family of faith.
Missionary families live together in their own household, but walk closely alongside the wider missionary community, sharing in prayer, meals, and fellowship. Whatever your season of life looks like during your trip, you will not walk it alone—and these daily relationships become one of the greatest gifts of the whole experience.
-

SACRIFICIAL SERVICE
Missionary service is far more than meeting practical needs—it is an invitation to share in the self-giving love of Christ.
Jesus revealed the Father’s love by pouring Himself out for others, and He invites us to do the same: every act of sacrifice, every hidden service, every inconvenience embraced for another becomes a way of carrying the cross alongside Him. As we choose to put others before ourselves, Christ gradually conforms our hearts to His own, teaching us to decrease so His life may increase within us.
The missionary life is not simply about serving like Jesus—it is about letting Him transform us through the very act of serving.
The Rhythm of Missionary Life
What does life actually look like during a mid-term mission? As you settle into daily life, what first feels unfamiliar slowly becomes familiar. The people you came to serve become friends. The community who were first strangers become family. The rhythms of prayer, service, and ordinary life begin shaping your heart in ways you never expected. This is the gift of a mid-term mission: the time and space for Christ to work through the simple faithfulness of everyday life.

The cost varies depending on the mission location and length of your stay. We will give you guidance on how much to plan for each week or month. -
Mid-term missions are currently offered in the mission community where Francis Institute leadership is living and serving. For 2027, this will be in Costa Rica.
