Our Mission in
Peru
Living among and serving the poor. Proclaiming the Gospel. Strengthening the local Church.
Peru is where the Francis Institute's missionary vision first took root. Responding to the invitation of the local Church, our missionaries live among the people they serve, sharing daily life and walking alongside families through long-term relationships rooted in prayer, authentic Christian community, and service.
Picota is a small town of 8,000 located in the Amazon region of Peru. There are 124 surrounding villages that all belong to the one Catholic parish in Picota, which is served by only two missionary priests from Spain. While many people identify themselves as Catholic, only a small percentage of them have actually been baptized or catechized.
Our missionaries work in partnership with the priests, catechists, and parish communities, focusing on proclaiming the Gospel specifically to the poor, which is the vast majority of people in this area.
Mission Life in Peru
While every Francis Institute mission shares the same four pillars, each mission expresses them according to the unique needs of the local community.
-

PROCLAIMING THE GOSPEL
The Gospel is proclaimed through home visits, Bible studies, parish youth retreats, catechism classes, youth and young adult ministry, parish missions, and the daily witness of missionaries living among the people they serve.
-

MAKING DISCIPLES
Our mission is relational, accompaniment of children, youth, young adults, and families as they grow in faith, helping them become disciples themselves who can share the Gospel within their own homes, work, and communities.
-

BUILDING COMMUNITY
Community is built through long-term presence. By sharing daily life, fostering authentic friendships with the poor, supporting parish life, and creating opportunities for prayer and fellowship, the missionaries seek to strengthen the local Church one relationship at a time.
-

SERVING THE POOR
Following Christ's example, we respond to both the spiritual and material needs of the communities we serve. Whether visiting and praying with the sick, assisting families in need of food or medicine, supporting small business initiatives, or simply accompanying those who are suffering, we strive to reveal the love of Christ through concrete acts of charity.
